What to Know Before You Remodel: Return on Your Remodel Investment (RORI)

I’ve completed a number of building projects in my construction career and been asked thousands of questions as a building contractor.  The one question that I have seldom been asked is, “I’d like to remodel my house.  What will be the return on my remodel investment  when I sell it in the future?”  Recently, I have come across a national study which answers the questions of remodeling costs and the value of that investment.

And I was taken aback by what I found.

Home remodeling projects ranging from backyard patios to major kitchen redesigns had been studied across the nation.  Regional job costs and their resell values were analyzed and compared. I found some surprises in the findings of the 2018 results.  I never would have imagined that garage door replacements and manufactured stone veneer home improvements would place in the top five project types in recouped costs after resale.

*All average costs are based on midrange materials & supplies, except for the garage door replacement which is based on upscale materials & supplies.
